About the Artist

Dick Schoenmakers is a Dutch visual artist and photographer whose work explores memory, transformation and the cultural significance of place.

For more than a decade, he has photographed religious heritage across Europe and beyond. Drawn to the beauty, craftsmanship and atmosphere of historic churches, monasteries and sacred spaces, he documents places that have shaped communities for generations.

His long-term project, In the Rosary of Enlightenment, is not a religious statement, but an invitation to reflection. Through photography, Schoenmakers explores how historic sacred spaces continue to influence contemporary society and how their meaning may evolve in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.

His images focus on architecture, light and atmosphere, while raising broader questions about heritage, identity and collective memory. Rather than providing answers, his work encourages dialogue about the future of these remarkable places and the role they may continue to play within society.
